Abstract

Educational technology has become an important component of higher education, influencing teaching, learning, assessment, communication, and academic administration. Learning management systems, video-based instruction, mobile learning, learning analytics, open educational resources, virtual and augmented reality, and artificial intelligence are increasingly used to support educational processes. This review examines the major opportunities and challenges associated with educational technology in higher education from educational and psychological perspectives. The literature indicates that technology can increase flexibility and access, support personalized learning, provide rapid feedback, expand learning resources, facilitate collaboration, and assist teachers with selected instructional and assessment tasks. At the same time, effective integration depends on infrastructure, digital competence, institutional support, accessibility, privacy, academic integrity, ethical governance, and sound pedagogy. Recent systematic reviews show particular promise for AI-based personalization and feedback, while also identifying concerns regarding bias, data security, human oversight, and uneven implementation. The paper argues that technology should complement rather than replace effective pedagogy and human relationships. Sustainable digital transformation therefore requires alignment among learning objectives, technology selection, teacher preparation, student digital literacy, institutional policy, and ethical safeguards.
